Hi,

I don't know if this is the correct forum to ask this question, but here goes:

At my company we use old netgear DS-104 100Mb hubs to sniff ethernet traffic. the problem is that those hubs are becoming very hard to find (in europe), so I need a replacement model.

so what I want is to find the cheapest available 100MB Hub or switch (most 100Mb hubs are in fact switches) that can do port mirroring.

anyone?

Cheers,
Daddy

Well if all you really need is a switch then Netgear unmanaged will still be fine. But if you want more control than a managed switch would be best and D-Link has them as well as Linksys.

do you have model names? and I really mean a hub because a switch won't let me see all packets that are passing through the other ports.

Cisco Catalyst 2900XL, 3500XL, 2950, and up all support port mirroring.
You can get a 2924 from Ebay for $50, the others around $100-$150.

thanks burt,

but I am looking for a more portable sniffer tool (my tech guys have to carry other stuff too),so 24-port switches are a no go, ideally it would be a 4-port device (like the netgear DS-104) 8-port would be acceptable too...

If you are looking to do port sniffing then what about software?

software is not a problem, I only need the sniffing tool (at least 100Mb, cheap and not too large)

If you are really wanting a 100mb hub, then just shop for them on EBay... also, you can find some 8 port Cisco managed switches on EBay as well;

but definetly not on the cheap side...

Most hubs are indeed NOT switches these days, or any other day. Smart Hubs still share BW, and therefor cut throughput into little pieces...

The cheapest solution is a little hub (Ebay)---managed switches, even 8 port deals, are not going to be cheap, especially if they can RSPAN.

I see a ton of them all around $10, with shipping.
