Hello everyone,

I have a Imac G4 with mac os 10.3 and I'm not able to connect it on the Internet with the Ethernet port. If I go in the system preference and network. I don't see my ethernet connexion in the state of the network. I like to know if it has an other place that I have to go to install my ethernet card. I know that if I have this problem with a PC I can reinstall the driver or verify if the network card is enable but I do not know if I can do it with a mac.

Thank you

Are you getting a "link" indication when you plug in a patch cord from the IMAC to your switch or router/gateway?

If you do, then at least the physical layer would appear to be working. If not then you may have a bad Ethernet port, and since it is on the mother board, you would need to get it serviced or get another computer. The IMACs do NOT have any PCI slots!

If you do get a "link", then launch Network Utility and click Info, then select Ethernet Interface (en0) and look to see if there is any activity, link speed, packets/errors, etc. from there you can make some determination as to what is going on.

I would think that if you get NO indication that the Ethernet is even there, then you have a REAL problem...

Follow the instruction in the second paragraph.

Hope this helps!

....JIM....

If you follow JIM's instructions and it turns out your ethernet port is not working, you could try using an USB-Ethernet adaptor to get the machine back on the network. It's a cheaper alternative to a motherboard repair/replacement but is a little slower, due to the USB 1.1 speed restriction. For large file swaps, it's back to FireWire or sneakernet, but for internet browsing/mail it's fine.

I have the same machine with an ethernet port which got fried during a thunderstorm (along with the ADSL modem) and use this method with a Belkin F5D5050 and a pegasus driver from That resource lists chipsets and relevant drivers. I found it a far better solution than USB wireless adaptors, which were problematic (Mac-compatibility, speed, signal strength)

soi la, soi carré

Every once it a while I lose it at home when there's a power outage. I unplug everything - modem, router, etc - including unplugging the power - and then replug and it will work again. I got that idea from the cable company.

Same thing happened to a friend in New York City last week with DSL. I gave her that fix and she was back up.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

My ethernet port (MBP) misbehaved recently, and for some odd reason started working again perfectly after a reboot (following on from some security update or other). Worth a try perhaps?

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]
