Hello All,
I'm sort of new to cabling in "Practice". i have a client that does not want any cable fishing done in is house, but would like to have Ethernet wall jacks installed around the house.
When I visited his place, I noticed that each potential Ethernet jack location have unused 4 pair CAT 3 cable available.
My question is as follows,
Can I terminate the CAT wires into RJ45 connectors?
Can I terminate the other ends into a CAT5 patch panel cross connecting to a Auto Sensing 10/100 Switch?
What are the draw backs to this setup other than the fact that I might have to set the host cards to 10 instad of Auto?

Any specific resposes to the three questions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

If they are home runs you can do what you stated but make sure the client signs off on the fact that they have a 10 meg network.

which will probably be just fine for most home networks where the primary purpose of networking is broadband access and occasinal file sharing

10baset is just fine when you are primarly accesing internet via broadband at maybee 1.5

the slow down will be in printing

save yourelf some money on the connectors and pick up cat5 (vs 5e) on ebay

like franklin says as long as they understand the limitation

you can easily pick up some brand new Cat 3 inserts at a very good price. patch panel might cost a little bit more but i don't see a point buying a 3-400 bucks cat5e patch panel and terminate cat 3 cables on it. be better off just crimp an rj-45 at the other end and go straight into a hub or a router. auto-sensing switching will also be a waste since you're operating at 10Mbps so might as well get just a hub which in most cases, fairly cheap off the shelf.

Thank you all for your tips. Its Greatly appreciated.
I'll post a follow up as soon as I have one.

Thanks again

for a patch panel get a blank one then you can use either the cat3 or cat 5 inserts.
