Ethernet monitoring

I have a private network set up between 2 AIX 5.2 systems. I would like to monitor that network for performance, etc. (it tends to get clogged once in a while). I am looking for something that I can run as a daemon/background process and will let me review the results in realtime and/or for previous hours.

Any pointers towards something that will let me do this are greatly appreciated.
