Has anyone ever seen a tester/detector that can identify if the device on the other end of the link is a pc or a switch? I’ve gotta think that there is some kind of layer 3 info that identifies the link. I know it seems kinda odd but I’ve got a site with some 16 or so switches used to cover over 1500 ft of linear length and they’re hip scotching all around with no labeling. I could tone and locate each link but it will take a long time, a plug in that says hey this is a computer requesting dhcp or even better hey this is a pc (even if it has a static ip) or hey this is an uplink would be useful. Probably doesn’t exist but I thought I’d check, and yes if it is a dhcp network I could plug a laptop in and wait and see if I get an ip on each and every one but if there is something simpler and faster that would be cool.

Try using a network viewing tool that should give you the MAC addresses that are requesting the DHCP.
If you have the MAC address then you can do a MAC address lookup to see who is the LAN card manufacturer which will tell you the source of the DHCP request.

Best to keep a spread sheet of MAC address's on your network indicating what device it is.

Here is the lookup

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

If you have the cash, Fluke makes a bunch of devices that can do that and a lot more.

They start at $1150 on Amazon.

If you go for the gusto, some models will give you all of the switch info to include the port number you're connected to.
