Has anyone ever seen a tester/detector that can identify if the device on the other end of the link is a pc or a switch? I’ve gotta think that there is some kind of layer 3 info that identifies the link. I know it seems kinda odd but I’ve got a site with some 16 or so switches used to cover over 1500 ft of linear length and they’re hip scotching all around with no labeling. I could tone and locate each link but it will take a long time, a plug in that says hey this is a computer requesting dhcp or even better hey this is a pc (even if it has a static ip) or hey this is an uplink would be useful. Probably doesn’t exist but I thought I’d check, and yes if it is a dhcp network I could plug a laptop in and wait and see if I get an ip on each and every one but if there is something simpler and faster that would be cool.
