Are there any cards which work especially well/are easily installed on Windows 2000? I have had trouble with 2 brands of cards so far, and am about to give up.

Details:

I have had trouble getting ethernet adapter/network cards to work on my Compaq Presario laptop, which is running Windows 2000 Professional. I have spent a lot of time on the phone with support people at Linksys. I also tried installing a Netgear card which works on our Windows ME laptop, but I get an error when I try to install it on Windows 2000. Is this a common problem, or do I need to reinstall the OS or what?

What cards have you tried to date..

"DLink" tends to be trouble free

FWIW, I've had no problem with the LinkSys EtherFast 10/100 PC Card in any laptop with Win98, 2K or XP. Though I have not used it specifically in a Compaq Presario laptop.

I have successfully installed Intel, 3Com, and a handfull of generic NICs into Windows2000 machines.

Successfully = Working with no problems installing.

*NOTE* Never in a Compaq though... all were "home builds."

Sorry, I just re-read your post and saw you're talking about a laptop...

I have an "old" CTX 200Mhz laptop with Win2K. It is using a 3Com PCMCIA NIC... no problems.

3Com - any 100Mb/sec variant.

Intels are good too.

Anything else seems to be pot luck, IME. CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

I have had a lot of sucess with win2k, compaq and the intel cards.

3com 3c905x and Intel Pro 100's. 3Com 905x series is faster than Intel on any and all NIC's i've tested thus far (thats a LOT, too), but both are very "install-friendly".
