first off...I'm a Linux newbie...so please be specific with suggestions ;-)

I have a box I installed RH7 on...in the install it sees the NIC just fine (it's a 3Com)...I tell it to use DHCP and to activate at boot...

when I go to boot it sits on the card for a minute or so saying determining IP...finally returning operation failed...

the box is plugged into my switch which is plugged into my corporate network...the port works fine as I can plug a Win machine in and have no problem...I have also tried plugging the box right into the wall (rather than thru the switch) and it still fails...here's the clincher...it works in another office just fine!

any ideas?

thanks in advance

Try a different patch cable, its not the computer if it works in a different office.

actually I had tried that with 2 different additional cables...

but I can throw one more wrench in...as I wasn't attached to rh7, I tried a different distro yesterday (Lycoris)...and it worked just fine...of course it is to unlike Linux for me to say I'm learning linux, but it is something to do with rh7 and the route it has to go from my office to the rest of the world...I downloaded rh9 and see if that fixes/resolves the issue...

thanks
