We just had a vendor come in and install Solaris on a new machine. Im sure he probably gave me the root password before he left but I dont remember what he used. Its been a few weeks and I finally got back to the project and dont remember it, but the machine is still logged on with a super user console session on the screen so I can go in and modify the etc/shadow file, but I want to make sure I dont mess it up, I dont work with Unix that much. Do I just have to edit etc/shadow and delete root's password setting to reset it to be blank? I dont want to screw this machine up since the vendor spent several hours configuring it. I can probably get in touch with the technician, but just in case he doesnt remember, Ill have to try to reset the password..

any help would be appreciated..

Why don't you just run the "passwd" command and change the password to what ever you wish? It does not require the old password since you are already logged on.....

that was what I though too, but the machine is logged on as the Oracle database user, who then did an su, and if I try to do passwd unix wants to change the Oracle user not root's password.. I have a "super user" prompt, not exactly a root prompt I guess...

Sorry, you said superuser so I assumed that was root... Any way there is a FAQ on the subject. Just click on the FAQ tab above. There is also a previous "forgot roots password" question that I saw a couple of days before. Do a search and see if you can find it.... The FAQ will give you a step by step....
