does anyone know what the callbook entry in /etc/services is used for (if ever)?

Thanks.

never heard of it..... it's either a legitimate application that's unique to your machine, or a backdoor that some idiot has put in there, or some standard service that I never heard of......

I would be inclined to comment out anything in the /etc/services file that I didn't know was needed, after some investigation of course, and be careful if it's a live box. Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

callbook is in a standard new install AIX 4.3.3 listing in /etc/services file...
callbook 2000/tcp
callbook 2000/udp
That does not mean it uses it just reserves it.........but a lot of applications are in the /etc services files as place holders...As Mike said. you can comment out
what you do not need....

I am not familiar with callbook...but it is in place for a standard install.

port 2000 is used for
Network Terminal Accelerator Installation and
Configuration Support

Thank you both for responding. We have a new application that wants that port.
