How does one tell what patch level has been applied to an ESX installation?

Just took over admin and not sure if the previous person applied all the patches.

Go into virtual center, click on the host and the right pane will display the version number and build number. You can also get that information from the CLI. SSH into the host and type "cat /proc/vmware/version

That is the Version and Build #.. But I think that is different than the patch level. Or when you apply a patch does that change the build number?

Almost every patch changes the build number. The documentation for each patch describes the build number it will increase to. My opinion on patching is that you should only patch what you need to patch. Choose only the patches that are rellevant to your environment. There are no "support penalties" for not havig every patch up to date. Patches for ESX 3.0.1 can be found at
I would suggest reading each article and determining which patches are necessary.
