Hi All, I am a veeery newbie to esx server and need some help please. We are very interested in virtual servers and i downloaded esx 3.5 eval edition to trial it. Now we had an old server in the corner and are using that as the test machine. Installed esx 3.5 onto the server all installed ok. Installed the infrastructure client onto another machine and can log into the server ok. However we have no datastore setup and when we go to set one up it comes back with an error each time saying cannot mount volume cannot connect to NFS server.
Do i need a SAN or can we use a network share to make the datastore?

Regards
Max

what are the local drives? I don't believe esx supports ide except for the esx boot drive. need to be SCSI, SAS, NAS, or SAN

Thanks for the quick reply.
ok the server we are using has scsi drives in the machine but could not find a driver for the scsi controller that esx would recognize. so we put in a ide drive to install esx that part works ok i think.
The drive i tried to make a datastore on was a scsi drive but over the network. Is that possible? As i said i am a real newbie on this so excuse the basic questions but do i need more than one network card? does the storage need to be in the main box?

not sure i understand what you mean by "over the network". is it an iscsi SAN or are you trying to connect to a network share.

NFS will work and internal scsi storage will work, but the controler must be on esx server hcl list. What type of server HP? DEll?

You can start with one network card but should have alteast two. ONe for the connection from the management software to the esx server and atleast one for the virtual servers to use. but again one will work

Trying to use a network share.

What controller are you refering to? the network card or the scsi controller?

The type of server, is not sure, not on the site at present, but it was an old server that was still in working order. I have installed server 2008 eval edition on the scsi disks of the server, which works fine, so we have drives for the scsi card but ESX would not recognize the card or the drivers that we have.

Take a look at this See if your SCSI controller or server it listed on here.
I personaliy tried loading esx server on a gateway and it didn't function since gateway servers on not even on this list

You cannot use a network share from the esx server itself for the data store.
