Hi,

I have an essay for uni on OLAP:

===========================================================
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the different OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) models and suggest the ways in which some of the newer OLAP tools are attempting to overcome these weaknesses.
===========================================================

Would people consider the different olap models to be rolap, dolap, holap, and molap? Or would it be somthing else?

What would people consider to be the newer tools?

If anyone could point me in the right direction i would be grateful.

Thanks

Davo12: I'd say you've got the list of models right. Suggest you look at websites for products such as Business Objects, Brio, Essbase (Hyperion) and, of course the seagatesoftware.com site for information about Holos and Info (their OLAP tools) David C. Monks

Take a look at WhiteLight for holap. They have a molap cache that can be accessed by all users. The contents of the cache are built up over time as users run queries.

To me, arguments boil down to "just in time" vs. "just in case". With MOLAP, you have calculated the answer to every possible question just in case it is asked. In a live situation this can involve a lot of data + a lot of dimensions = a lot of time. Managers are asking for more frequent builds so that data is up-to-date as well as better availability, therefore the window for rebuilding gets smaller.

I've got some DW resources on my site as well. My Home -->
