ESMTP- Cannot send mail

Good Evening, I have a 7025-F50 and cannot send mail. I stopped and restarted the sendmail deamon and confirmed its running. I tried to send a test note and get the following........

mail -v erios@xxxxx.com < test.log

Connecting to e34.co.com. via esmtp...
Connecting to e1.ny.com. via esmtp...
Connecting to e36.co.com. via esmtp...
Connecting to e4.ny.com. via esmtp..
Deferred: A remote host did not respond within the timeout p
eriod. with e3.ny.com.

Is there a firewall between the F50 and xxxxx.com?

What have you got setup as your relay host in /etc/sendmail.cf
The line should start with DS

Can you the ping the relay host?

can you telnet to port 25 on the relay host?
