esd and gnome

I'm having trouble getting my applications (particularly xmms and the gnome esd monitor applet) to connect to esd. Runing esdplay from the command prompt works fine. when I switch the output plug-in in xmms to the OSS driver, xmms works fine. I guess this isn't the biggest deal, but it appears to me that esd is the preferred way to use sound so I'd like to get it to work. oh, and I'm running Redhat 7.2 (with kernel 2.4.18).

any suggestions?
