Through the many years I have upgraded codes on Nortel Switches, I have always updated the software image first, then updated the firmware image. I have yet to brick a switch until today. We have an older 4550T that was at code level 5.0.x, so I was going to upgrade to the 5.6 code. I upgraded the code, the swich went through it's light show, and when it reboots, it has the message Agent Code Verification Fails!. After getting the error message, I looked at the release notes and it states I should have upgraded the Diagnostic code first. Now when I boot the switch, hit ctrl+c, I do get the menu to try to download an older agent code, but when I do, it always says Agent Code Verification Fails! I have tried to initialize the switch, and try to put the oldest code I can find, 5.1.0, but nothing works. Does anybody know how to get around this?

I only saw that once and it was RMA time. You could try the 'initialize flash' option from the menu and see if that helps. That will wipe whatever config you have on the switch though.

I've known the procedure to be upgrading the diagnostic image first, then the agent code afterwards. The only exception I recall to that was on the 460/470s back in the 3.5 or 3.6 days where the config would corrupt if the diags were updated first. That happened to me once and taught me to always read the release notes, especially when making big code jumps.
