I have a Win2k Member server in my domain that I am trying configure as a second domain controller but I can't get the DCPROMO utility to complete the install. The steps that I've been following are:

First I logon on to the Member server using the domain admin account. I then start the DCPROMO utility and choose the 'Additional Domain Controller' option. I use the domain admin account info in the 'Network Credentials' window, click next and then I get stuck. Regardless of whether I type my domain name or choose it from the browse window (I can see it listed), as soon as I click 'Next' I get the message that: 'The domain <domainname.com> cannot be contacted. Select a different domain.'

If any one could help out with what I might be doing wrong, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Make sure your DNS entries are correct.

I am running a caching DNS server on my current domain controller. The Member server points to the current domain controller for DNS. Since I can ping the domain controller using it's fully qualified domain name, doesn't that tell me that my DNS entries are correct?

Is you Domain Controller a Win2000 Server? Is Active Directory Running (Both on the DC and do you start it on the server you are trying to promote to DC?) Sound as if your DNS is fine. (Could be wrong, but I dont think so).

Thanks to both of you for your input. It did end up being a DNS issue. I didn't have the original DC set to update DNS dynamically. Once I made that change and then restarted, apparently the necessary DNS entries were added for the DC as DCPROMO ran on the Member Server without problem. Thanks again.
