Errors saving files "CANT" // how to empty scratch discs

Does anyone know if there is a way to empty the scratch disks in illustrator without closing the program and reopening it?
I am working with large files and I have to save a lot, after a while it always comes up with an unknown error, or an error called "CANT" and it won't save again until i restart the program.. I think it is because the scratch disks are full but i'm not sure. I've tried changing the drives which the scratch disks run off but it hasn't helped..I'm using CS2 on a PC with 2gig ram.
