When the desktop loads I get an "cpeupdate.lnk is not available" error message.

Have attempted to speak to Microsoft, but they are about as much use as banging your head against the wall.

Anyone know how I can update this link?

you have deleted a file that a shortcut on your desktop was pointing to. Do a search for cpeupdate.lnk. It should be in a directory called "desktop". You can delete the this file directly from your search results.

it won't be on the desktop. check your startup folder and check the startup key in the registry. One of them is trying to run this shortcut.

I got the CPEUPDATE.LNK error message after I tried to upgrade from 98SE to XP and had such a disaster I had to uninstall XP and revert back to 98SE. It is easy to delete the link, but does anyone know what CPEUPDATE is?
For those interested, here is a list of problems caused by XP that I know of so far:
1. XP installed OE 6.0 but didn't import the mail files. This looked like a total disaster until I found the files in (would you believe) in c:\windows\cookies\appl.....(etc). For those who depend on e-mail for their livelihood this was a heart stopper.
2. Despite getting a new XP compatible driver from the manufacturer my 2Wire SOHO network became very unstable and would just quit working after awhile (minutes after re-booting). Re-booting would get it back but it would just quit working again.
3. Got new XP software and drivers for my HP Photosmart p1100 printer but still could not get it to connect over the network (when the network was working). Tried to install printer locally and that did not work.
4. Tried to call (toll) Microsoft warranty technical support to get help only to get a message that said, in effect, "due to the great popularity of XP the you will have an unusually long wait"; notice that the cause of the wait is not due to "the problems" with XP, it is due to "the popularity".
5. It now being 1:00 AM, and knowing my wife needed to make a production run in early AM, I opted to uninstall XP. When I got back to my original 98SE OS, the OE address book was now incompatible because it had been converted to 6.0, the mail files were still missing, most of "My Document" folders and files weren't there (found them in c;\windows\nethood), my Adobe fonts were missing, the computer is complaining that my HP Photosmart printer is not setup right, the drivers for my 2Wire network were missing, and I was getting the CPEUPDATE.LNK error message
6. [reserved for problems yet to be found]
