errors and failure to do backups

I can’t fathom what is wrong with our backup. I get all kinds of various errors messages depending on whether the jukebox is shut off or not, restarted the services or both. I constantly get Tape0 reading: read open error: drive status is Drive reports no error - but state is unknown when I know for a fact there is a tape in the drive. I get command operation `UNLOAD', command ID 650 is not connected. The ID number may vary, but the error is still there. Every day I get nsrd: media waiting event: Waiting for 1 writable volumes to backup pool 'Default' tape(s) on scd-xx1.hosed.com, even when I add the tape for the day. I’m also getting nsrd: savegroup info: scd-xx1.hosed.com:F:\Public: No full backups of this save set were found in the media database; performing a full backup. Yet it doesn’t do a full back up, it doesn’t include a major piece of the backup. And it seems like every time a job runs, with every tape, I get media verification failed. That’s at least 14 tapes here. I don’t see how everyone of them is bad, but what do I know. I’m really at wit’s end here in what to do. I've never used legato before and had to inherit it from the past admin. Using version 7.3.2 build 364.

1. Hardware/jukebox errors
Nobody can solve a problem without knowing what and how you have setup your equipment. I just guess that the jukebox has been misconfigured and that actually the wrong drive is loaded. This also explains why you see this error on more than one drive.

This is also the most obvious reason for you media verification problems.

If this was a running environment, something obviously broke.

2. Media waiting events
This for sure points to a wrong POOL setup. If you have such problem, NW will actually use a tape from the Default pool - consequently demanding such.

3. No full backups ...
Every BU software starts a backup cycle with a full. If the schedule starts anything else and NW can not find a full, it must override your selection.

Can it be that you are a newbie to backup in general? - If this is the case, I honestly urge you to attend a training to learn Backup Basics. The data is just too important.
