Ive just done a standard restore of a mksysb. When the achine rebooted the NIC config wasn't restored and had to be re-entered. Now I find that the kernal hasn't got the Oracle extensions any more.

a) Can anyone spot what went wrong?
b) Any hints on restoring the Oracle extensions.
c) Is there anythig else that I might have overlooked?

Many thanks

a) bad mksysb? hard to diagnose without any output or results of mksysb.
b) reinstall oracle.
c) nothing really to do on a mksysb other than load tape and reinstall.

Thanks kHz
We tried two separate bakups with the same result. As you say there's nothing except bootlist -n mormal rmt0, load the tape and go.

for a 433 machine with ORACLE 8 on it, I have this in inittab:

orapw:2:wait:/etc/loadext -l /etc/pw-syscall
orakx:2:wait:/etc/loadext /etc/adspc4.1
orakx2:2:wait:/etc/adspcinit
orakstat:2:wait:/etc/loadext -l /etc/ora_kstat

But I believe only the pw-syscall is really necessary in order to run ORACLE 8. Look for loadext and pw-syscall in /etc. If they're not there, you didn't have them when the backup was made, or that wasn't this machine's backup...

Strange that it isn't in your inittab anymore? Or did you load the K-ext manually?

If ORACLE 9, IMO the kernel extension isn't necessary.

Q: What error code do you get when starting ORACLE?
Q: Is AsyncIO available?

HTH,

The error is
Code:
Starting Oracle....
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program svrmgrl because of the following errors:
0509-130 Symbol resolution failed for /usr/lib/libc.a(aio.o) because:
0509-136 Symbol kaio_rdwr (number 0) is not exported from
                   dependent module /unix.
0509-136 Symbol listio (number 1) is not exported from
                   dependent module /unix.
0509-136 Symbol acancel (number 2) is not exported from

0509-136 Symbol iosuspend (number 3) is not exported from
                   dependent module /unix.
0509-136 Symbol aio_nwait (number 4) is not exported from
                   dependent module /unix.
0509-192 Examine .loader section symbols with the
                 'dump -Tv' command.

Database "mtst" NOT started.
/etc/pw-syscall is there and being loaded. It looks like I was wrong. The kernal extensions are loaded - I'll look again at async io.

smit aio -> change/show

for a decent sized ORACLE server:

Code:
MINIMUM number of servers [200] #
MAXIMUM number of servers [200] #
Maximum number of REQUESTS [16384] #
  Server PRIORITY [39] #
STATE to be configured at system restart available +
State of fast path enable +

I still don't know why my mksysb tapes are not restoring properly but many, many thanks for your help on aio. The STATE to be configured at system restart was wrong.

I've now got my databases back up and running.
