I am unable to start my firewall service and a bunch of others because of some dependencies not being started or marked for deletion? It doesnt say what depencies are causing the problems. Below is one of the errors I found in event viewer. It is listed overe 40 times in the last 2 days. By the way, I just setup this pc 2 days ago.It a newly home built pc.

Windows couldn't log the RSoP (Resultant Set of Policies) session status. An attempt to connect to WMI failed. No more RSoP logging will be done for this application of policy.

WMI = Windows Management Instrumentation. It is a network management

infrastructure used to manage Windows computers and also is used by some

local components to surface machine configuration and status information.

MSInfo is a client to WMI information, however it seems that your WMI is

corrupt, this can or has been caused before by a virus infection. So I

would recommend a virus scan.

To fix this problem do these steps here:

open cmd.exe and type the following commands in order.

%homedrive%

cd %windir%\system32\wbem\repository

net stop winmgmt

del * /s /q

regsvr32 wbemupgd.dll

Your problem should be fixed at this point.

ok..i gave it a try and here is a message I got, "LoadLibrary("wbemupgd.dll")failed.The specified module could not be found.

Try this:
wmiprvse /regserver

1) Start > Run > "CMD"
2) When the command window opens up, type the wmiprvse statement
3) Retry setup afterwards

To rebuild WMI
Start|Run|Command
1) type Mofcomp.exe %windir%\system32\wbem\cimwin32.mof and press enter.
2) type Regsvr32 wbemupgd.dll and press enter.
3) type regsvr32 wbemsvc.dll and press enter.

this also might help.

If that dont do then this should.

Click Start, Run and type the following command:

rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository

Hal
I am trying all of your directions, but none of the dll or exe files you mentioned are found .They seem to be missing. I even did a search for them. Is there a directory on my disk that I can get them from and decompress them into windows?

ok..I think I got the answer. I copied the c:\windows\system32\wbem from my other xp machine to this one.So far, all looks good. I will report more when i try a few more things.
Thanks Hal

nice one. hopefully you wont have any more problems, glad to help :)

ok..Im back!
I still do not have a Remote tab in control panel, system.
Also, I cannot see this pc from my other computers even though we are on the same workgroup. Lastly, I noticed that when I goto the Add/Remove Programs icon and click Windows Components, it says something about msnmsn.inf is missing.
Thanks

the msnmsn.inf just means windows messenger is missing, its not either, been installed or its been removed. windows messenger comes with XP as standard, did you do a custom install when you installed XP or was it the normal install? you should be able to do a repair from your windows XP cd, NOT the recovery console. Try that and see if it fixes your XP as it seems you've had a few problems as of late. Once you've done that retry the share and see if that also has been sorted. let me know how you get on.

I havent tried the repair yet, but I am able to see all my shares on my other pc's. I think its because I never rebooted my machine after I copied over the wbem folder!!
The only existing problems are the remote tab is missing from my system icon (I dont use remote logging in anyway) and the error with th msn file. I will try what you suggested Hal and let you know. Thanks again!
