We have an old SP system running AIX 4.3.3 ML11. One of the disks in the SSA array failed and was replaced by an IBM engineer. However re-introducing the disk back into the system is down to us. When we try to we get the error message
Code:
extendvg jaws01vg hdisk20
0516-024 extendvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run
        diagnostics.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.
0516-1254 extendvg: Changing the PVID in the ODM.
Method error (/usr/lib/methods/chgdisk):
        0514-047 Cannot access a device.

0516-024 extendvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run
        diagnostics.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.
The disk is ok in diag and verifies ok. lscfg shows the correct disk serial no.
Any tips or pointers please.

Most probably the disk once was an SSA RAID member and you want to use it as a plain PV in a VG

I believe you have to format the disk. Not sure how to go about this, but it should be in diag ssa service aids.

HTH,

you can go through the ssa raid screens within smit and check the status of the drive. meaning, if it shows up as an array canidate disk and you want it to be a jbod, then you'll need to change it to what you need. can't remember all the terminology, it's been over a year since i've worked with ssa.

if you can see the pvid, then that's a good thing....

Thanks. Formatting did the trick. For the record we used
Code:
ssa-format -l pdisk20 #Formats physical disk 20
ssa-progress -l pdisk20 #reports on how far through the formatting has gone
