Error while unpacking .z file

I am trying to unpack the file with tar.z extension.
uncompress will work for .Z files

gzip will work for .gz files

while executing the unpack command i am getting the following error...

unpack: netvault-R2005DEC09-EXCALIBUR-aix.tar.z: This file is not in packed format.

any idea to fix this problem..

You might try using WinZip on a Windows box. It seems to handle most formats, as long as the file is not corrupt (like FTPing it ASCII).

try renaming the file to .Z if that fails try just .tar
