Error when writing CD's

I have just got a sumsung r40 machine with a built in DVD writer. When i try to write files to the Cd i get an error saying Problem Copying.. "windows has encountered a problem when trying to copy this file"
I am logged onto the machine as a user with admin permissions, i have also logged onto the machine as the administrator and i get the same error.
I am able to physical copy a file to C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning and then i get the balloon saying there are files to write. But when i go to the CD drive there is nothing listed. It seems as though there is some corruption within the CD writing process in Windows. Are there any ways around it apart from rebuilding the machine.

you could try to install a dedicated burn software, such as NERO...

for freeware:

if the problem then still persists, then it may be time to do a repair install or a fresh install of windows...

Make sure the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is set to manual.

Ask if you cannot find this setting...

Also make sure you are dragging your files to the CDR icon and not into that folder path you listed.
