I am using Oracle 8i Personal Edition, and I want to switch from NOARCHIVELOG mode to ARCHIVELOG mode. After checking the box for ARCHIVELOG mode in the DBA studio GUI, I get the following error when the database tries to restart:

"The exception (org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM) occured."

Does anyone know why I am receiving this message? I would REALLY like to figure out how to do hot backups as soon as possible so the help would be greatly appreciated.

My ability to advise you is limited by not having Oracle 8i personal edition. However, the steps for turning on archiving have been discussed a number of times in this forum. I suggest that you follow the steps outlined in thread186-40817. With any luck it will work for 8i personal edition too.

If you manage to get archiving turned on through the GUI tool, please let us know how you resolved your problem. It would be a good tip for all of us.

Thanks for the response. I read the thread that you included in the response, and it prompted me to change some things in the init.ora file. I made the necessary changes, but I can't verify the archive log status. When I try to use "svrmgrl" I get the dreaded "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" message. I checked the tnsnames.ora file, and everything looks good. Do I need to use the "svrmgrl" utility to verify that the archive log mode or should I use SQLPlus? Which user should I connect as? Sorry, for all of the questions, but I'm new to Oracle as well.

Thanks.
