Error when saving

When connected through VPN to server, I have a user who frequently gets an error when he tries to save a file to the mapped drive on the network:
An error occurred while reconnecting to the <mapped network drive> to <the server>.
Microsoft Windows Network : The local device is already in use.
This connection has not been restored.

Any thoughts on why this happens frequently and what can be done to correct the problem? Thank you!

Can your user connect by using the UNC to the share instead of the drive letter? (ie. \\Server\share)
