Hi folks,

I have just completed the full AIX 4.3.3 installation (well I hope I have followed the right instructions) on IBM Desktop 43P so I can install Oracle 8.1.7 (and to build my confidence and knowledge of AIX).

Now I find the system takes a while to load up, so queried the errpt and it showed up a list saying something like

Software Program Error
System Shutdown by User
Error Logging Turned Off

If the system is taking a while to load up (5 to 10 mins) what could be the cause of the problem?

Is there any admin or configuring I should do once the installation is completed? I have four AIX disks with me and I have only installed the first one, I was kind of expecting AIX to request for the second and so on disks to be installed but no such information has come on the screen?

Is there anything I should do before proceeding.

This is my first time installing AIX so it is a deep learning curve for me.

Thanking you all in advance

Regards

Katherine

Any help?

For the most part, those are "standard" errors associated with a reboot.

5-10 minutes for a 43P is not too uncommon. Remember, this is not a PC. Everytime an AIX box restarts, it scans the SCSI bus for devices, mounts all filesystems, starts network services, etc...

I'd not be too concerned about the length of time.

I've got a 12 processor S80 that takes 45 minutes to reboot.

Bill.

ok it is just that it seems to take longer to reboot now before I installed the latest version of AIX 4.3.3

Many thanks for your help.

Did you load any maintenance or the "Corrective Service Disk" (Update CD) ?

Bill.

No didn't only installed the first disk, not too sure when to install the others disks as no such message came up on screen requesting for installation.

Should I install the above disks via smitty?

It has done the trick, now apps are running a lot quicker and many thanks for your help.

Just being curious, if I have only installed the first CD disk of the four AIX disks, when and at what stage should I install the other three disks?

Many thanks

Regards

Katherine

Load the first CD and get to it by using smit/software installation and maintenance/install and update software/install and update software by package name.

Scroll down the list to see what is already installed and what is available to install. Depending on what the system is used for, you may have to install only one or two things or many. A common thing you might need to install is the software for a network printer. Another thing you might need to install is all the software for X11, especially if your console is not a graphics console. If you don't install the X11 filesets, users won't be able to use GUI applications.

After you have selected what you want to install, smit will ask you to insert different CDs if it needs them.

also, have you used configassist? That is a GUI application (don't know if there is a non-GUI form) that guides you through installing all the documentation as well as other things like networking, time zone, paging space. I recommend you add the documentation. It doesn't take much room and comes in very handy.
