Windows XP - DSL Ethernet.

If I leave the computer on line on idle for a while, I get this error

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\Harddisk volume1\WINDOWS\System32. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

When I press OK, it reboots. OK s the only option.

If I'm working on it for a long time this does no happen. It keeps workin fine.

I've turned off all the screen savers, turn off "turn off disks and screen" options.

Any ideas.

Thanks.

Are you sure this is the whole error message?

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer to see more details on the error.

It sounds like a delayed write failure and not a network error.

Also, what are you using as a defragger? If Norton Speed Disk update the software.

Well, Happy New Year to all of you.

The error quit coming back after I defraged with WINDOWS.

And of course, as bcaster suggested, it was probably a problem with Norton Speed Disk 2003.

Anyways I have installed NortonSystem Works 2004 and hope it does not happen again. Is the NSW 2004 reliable?

Bcaster, I didn't get a chance to use the Event Viewer but I suspect you were right, the error message was quite long.

Thanks, really ....

I still have fond memories of the orignal Peter Norten DOS utilities, and still recommend NAV as an antivirus protection tool.

But to be honest I cannot recommend the rest of the current Symanetic suite. I think someone else with more experience in the newer Symantec tools should comment. I feel more confortable with other Third-Party tools to handle disk chores, and often freeware alternatives to the Symantec offerings for internet security.

I like very much the NAV part of the package, somebody else can offer a fairer review than I can of the rest. I do not use or recommend the use of the disk or internet security programs offered by Symantec.
