Hello,

I just upgraded to RedHat 9 and everything works great except my nameserver. When I try to start named (bind 9.2.1-16), I get the following error message: "rndc: connect failed: connection refused"

What does this mean? Could I setup my named.conf to not used rndc at all?

Thanks.

I don't think you can.
You need to generate keys for rndc to communicate with the daemon. It's all in the man page although kind of confusing.

Read the man page a few times a see if it makes sense.

I have read and read and read the man pages, and other sites............my configuration seems to be valid, yet I am still getting that same rndc connection error.

This is my rndc.conf file:
# Start of rndc.conf

key "rndc-key" {
algorithm hmac-md5;
secret "mysecret";
};

options {
default-key "rndc-key";
default-server 127.0.0.1;
default-port 953;
};

# End of rndc.conf

And this is my named.conf file (without the zone files):

# Start of named.conf
include "/etc/named.custom"
include "/etc/rndc.key"

key "rndc-key" {
algorithm hmac-md5;
secret "mysecret";
};

controls {
inet 127.0.0.1 port 953 allow { 127.0.0.1; } keys { "rndc-key"; };
};

#end of named.conf

Does anything look wrong?
