Error: Right click Link -> "Open in new Window"

Dear all,

suddenly on a DSL standalone machine WindowsXP SP1 the action to right click a link and to open it in a new Windows results in nothing! You still can open the link in the same window. In the moment I am downloading all the updates for XP.
But without success I tried so far to:
restart (yes sometimes it helps)
reset IE settings
check for malware/virus
changing toolbar to not group windows

Any idea is highly appreciated.
