I am currently migrating to another machine. My old machine had VSS 6.0 installed under windows '98 and runs fine. My new machine has VSS 6.0 installed under Windows 2000 and does not want to check in any files and gives an error message "error reading from file" when I try to check in or add a file to sourcesafe. There is nothing wrong with my network rights, however. Checking a file out is no problem either. Does anybody know what could be the problem here?

Thanks in advance [cry]

Is the database on the new machine or a remote server? If it is on another server, does it still operate fine from your old box?

In any case I would suggest you run analyze on the db...

I did just run analyze, and it yielded:

No errors or inconsistencies found.

The database is on a remote server, not on either the old or the new machine. I have to add something to the first message though: checking in files does work, it's only the creation of new files that does not work. I am experiencing the difficulties from MS-Access and could not check in files from visual studio dot net either (but VS dot net does not run on the old machine, so I have no comparison there). I log in using the same account, both in Windows (I am local administrator in Win2000) as in sourcesafe (so I should have the same rights [sadeyes]).

Best regards

Can you go check files in directly? I mean by using the add facility within the sourcesafe interface?

If not, then can you go back to your old pc and see if you can add files manually. At least that way you can see if VSS itself is the problem. Have you got VSS admin rights on the VSS database? Try removing yourself as a user and reinstating yourself.

If so, looks like the integration between .net and vss may be flaky.... would not be surprised! I had tremendous problems getting InterDev 6.0 working with VSS 6.0 - tremendously frustrating as all my team of developers got it set up initially OK and worked fine with them integrated for a few days, then one by one it stopped working for us, we got some sort of error suggested it was access rights. Never figured it :-(

Are you accessing your VSS database using a Novell connection? I had exactly this problem with Windows 2000 using the latest Novell 4.83 client. It affected only files with extensions with more than three characters.

However, on backing out to the 4.81 client everything is fine.

Thanks for all the support I am currently reinstalling WIN'0 again, as migrating to XP made absolutely no difference (except that XP does not want you to install any non-MS software, including Novell clients!). The files all have 3-character extensions and I cannot check in files directly with MS-Access projects (but I can't on the '98 machine either, it is a 'feature' of sourcesafe). I think there's no choice but to hire an expensive MS guy to ask how on earth SourceSafe must be installed.

Best regards

Thanks to Matt Joyce and mgbrooks for their info. You've saved me a lot of grief.
