error reading file when installing from Plextor DVD-DL

I am trying to install Need for Speed Most Wanted on my WindowsXP Pro sp2 system. I have a SATA Plextor dual layer PX-716SA. Everytime I it gets to 18% I get a "cannot transfer file" and it does not work no matter how many times I re-try. Rebooted, cleaned out background tasks, no good. Opened up my case and cleaned it out and also put a better SATA cable on the drive and made sure everything was tight. Still get the same error. Could it be my drive? I burn music all the time, no problems with that and I've installed other games okay, but did get a "cannot read source disc" error during install of Trackmania Sunrise. What do you guys think? I'll prolly pick up a new burner.

1)You should test each piece of equipment one at a time until you find the problem.
2) You should NEVER load games on your technical computer.

Best way to test it is to try to copy the contents of the cd onto a folder on your desktop. If you are able to get a successful copy then at least you know the cd is ok, not too badly scratched or otherwise unreadable.
If you are not able to get a copy of the cd onto a folder on your hard drive then it could be that the reader is bad.
Plextor is a good name and dual layers arent that old, maybe its under warranty? Either way i would suspect the cd before the player\burner.
Course you could always try and install the game or copy it to a folder on some elses pc, that would help you out too. Then you could suspect your Plextor unit for sure.

I don't think it's the drive as I've already copied intact disc 1. Even navigated the imbedded zip files, no corruption.....it could be my Install Shield Script. Something similar happened before, had to re-install the system I did an "upgrade" later today in an attempt to refresh my core files. Still had the error...other games have installed fine, but this is certainly not an islolated incident for me...

I have a very "secure" system. As a result, I have to install some programs in "Safe" mode. Easier than disabling the security programs. I only do this in local installs with known safe programs, and do a complete scan afterwords.

if I remember right, it has the new SafeDisk Copyprotection, which in fact intercepts Virtual CD's...

if you have a Virtual CD/DVD Mounted (Alcohol, Nero, CloneCD, or DeamonTools, etc.) you may need to disable it...

alternatively, it could well be that due to the fact that it is a SATA version, and not an IDE, that this too plays into the equation....

Well I went out and exchanged the game for another one, same error, and even bought a different game, and it reported similar errors. I decided to re-install the system but now, even when booting from the XP CD, I get a blue screen "windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer". This is very odd seeing as how it had booted from the disc, meaning it bypassed the normal startup routine. Also got the same error when trying to re-install Windows but after a normal boot. This is very interesting....any clues?? The only thing different is that I just put in 2 gigs of ram but everything else runs fine, no crashes, games work great, etc. Just when I tried to re-install Windows I get the error....

Better test the ram first, one stick at a time. You can google memtest to do the job.

Thanks for the added information...

as Garebo mentioned... TEST that RAM... and make sure that it is Compatible with the MOBO, otherwise you will run into more problems later, as it may seem to work nicely... but the indication that all this had started AFTER you inserted the new RAM, should have been a sure sign as to where the problem is buryied...

Well the original problem occured before the new ram was even installed....my mobo can support up to 4 gigs and it's the same exact type of ram I had before, just more of it...

What are the Specs of your PC? especially the PSU, as it may be underpowered!
