error : ORA-01034 ORACLE not available

after installing oracle 8.1.7 on solaris 8 i m finding "ORA-01034 ORACLE not available" problem while creating and initializing a database....it is not allowing to start the database, the /etc/system parameters hv also been changed before installation.pls help in this regard.

"Creating and Initializing" ? Have you configured your init.ora file properly? Did you set ORACLE_SID=instance properly?

Can u connect by svrmgrl?
