Have a computer that crashed and when it came back up, it was logging into the default profile instead of the users profile. Ran a system restore and that fixed the issue of logging into the wrong profile, however, now when any Excel file is opened it gives the following error:

C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\email grade cards.xls could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

What version of Excel?

Have you tried running Office Diagnostics (depending upon version)?

Have you tried running a repair install of Office?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office?

I'd try the above if you've not done so already.

Then I'd also wonder if it could be bad memory. Although, it does sound moreso software-related to me..

And what about that file, "email grade cards.xls", do you recognize it at all? If not, if there are multiple users, is there a way you can ask other users to see if anyone recognizes it? I'd wonder if it was somehow caused by malware with a name as that... if you don't recognize the file, obviously.

Excel version 2007

I have not tried doing an uninstall/reinstall. The computer is part of domain and has everything it needs cached. It is a laptop that is used by one of our reps. He is not local here. My main concern is that if I uninstall/reinstall, he won't be able to get his Outlook working correctly in case he has to reinput the server information (would tell him no exchange server could be found)

The file is recognized and one he uses daily.

And did he at some point configure Excel to open that file upon opening?

Ok I managed to get this resolved (hopefully). For anyone out there that might stumble across this problem sometime, here is what I did.

I went into the Excel Options (from the Office button in the upper left).
From there I went to the Save section and reset the AutoRecovery File Location, the Default File Location, and the Server Draft Locations.

After that I went into the Trust Center and under Trusted Locations, I reset the paths for Excel 2007 Default Location: User Startup and Excel 2007 Default Location: User Templates

I then had him reboot and so far so good. Able to open Excel files without that error message.
