I would appreciate it if someone could offer some help on this one!

I have been trying to open/link to a couple .dbf files using MS Access (2002) without any success. Instead, the message I keep getting is "External table is not in the expected format". Clicking "HELP" isn't offering much, only telling me that it's (Error 3274) and that I should try again. I've also tried using ODBC without any success.

A piece of information that seems relevant; for each .dbf file there is a corresponding .cdx file. For example, for "test.dbf" there is also "test.cdx" and so on.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at here, or what the solution is. I have been able to open the .dbf files using MS Excel, but this is of little use as I know for certain that the total number of records is somewhere in the neighborhood of 125,000, and Excel allows around 65,000.

Please help!!

DBF files tend to be created by dBase or perhaps Clipper. The *.cdx files are index files.

You seem to be be importing the file correctly...
From the main menu, "File" -> "Get External" -> "Import"

In the Import dialog window, click on the "Files of Type" drop down list arrow.

Since we apparently do not know the specific database type, you will have to experiment with dBase III, IV and 5.

Are you experiencing bad data? dBase was infamous for a CTRL-Z end-of-file in the data. Try recreating the indexes in the original database file.

The presence of the .CDX file suggests that the .dbf was created and indexed using FoxPro (various versions since inception create the .CDX file for structural indexes).
