Hi - I have 2 drives - drive c and drive d.

I have no problem defragging drive c, but I keep getting an error when trying to defrag drive D.

This is the error message:
"Error defragmenting Drive D
Windows cannot finish defragmenting this drive because it has encountered a problem.
Click help and carry out the instructions for running ScanDisk, and then try defragmenting again."

I have run ScanDisk, and there was no problem found.
I rebooted the computer a couple of times and tried the process over but the same thing happened.

Is anyone familiar with this problem - how do I fix it?
I tried running norton Windoctor but didn't come up with any problems there either.

Did you do the thorough scan disk on windows and/or Nortons?

Aishaa,

Yes, to repeat what Kjonnnn just said, make sure you select "thorough" instead of "standard" in Windows scandisk and see if it finds anything. This scan can take several hours to complete.

Also, since you appear to have Norton's utilities installed, run the "disk doctor" on D: and let the surface scan complete.

When you're running either SCANDISK or DEFRAG, make sure there are absolutely NO programmes running in background, like antivirus etc. Also switch OFF the screen saver, and ensure "System standby" and "Turn off hard disks" are both set to NEVER. Better still, run the utilities in SAFE MODE.

Norton WinDoctor likely won't help here because it is concerned mainly with the Registry and other system files and links. However, I incurred a similar problem that also was not solved with Scandisk. I then ran Norton DiskDoctor, and it solved the problem for me. As suggested, you might also set it to include a surface scan. Then, if you have the program, use Norton SpeedDisk rather than Defrag. It is far faster, arranges files better, and is less fussy about problems it might incur.
