I have been struggling to configure my backups correctly ever since I installed Backup exec. I have read the manual several times and I still have not been able to get the software to load tapes correctly.
I have a Compaq ML 370 server connected to a Compaq TL891 Mini library. The tape loader has slots for 10 tapes. I have a cleaning tape in one of the slots. What I have been trying to do is have the tape written to until full and then have the next tape written to until they are full at which time I will replace all the tapes in the magazine. Currently I have a media set created called media set 1. At first I tried putting all the tapes into that media set thinking that as tape became full then the software would simply find the next appendable tape. That didn’t work. Then I tried putting all the tapes in the Scratch media set because the manual said that the software would always look there for appendable media. Currently there are three blank tapes in the scratch media set. For some reason the software will not load these tapes.
The last few times I have had to manually move a tape from the scratch media set to the active media set for the back up to work. I had tried moving another of the blank tapes to the active media set (the media set configured in the back up job, which I have called Media set 1.) My problem is that I cannot figure out how to get the software to just get the next Appendable media.
This morning I came in to find out that the software was asking to append to media that I had put in Archive media despite the fact that there are three blank appendable tapes sitting in scratch media. Again I have read the manual till I’m blue and this is getting ridiculous. What I want is very simple. I want a to load 9 tapes into the magazine. And have the software write to each tape till full and then get the next appendable tape. When there are only one or two appendable tapes left I want to put in blank tapes or erased tapes, into the magazine and have them written to.
Could any one explain, blow by blow, how to accomplish this? Currently if I manually move one of the blank tapes to the media set I created
Currently the error message I get is not appendable media available despite the fact that there are three appendable tapes in scratch media. If I move one of these tapes manually to Media set 1 it loads the media forever (it “loaded media” for two days over the weekend.) I know I am missing something but after attempting to follow the manual I have not been able to solve this problem. The settings for the media set are no overwrite and infinite append. The blank tapes are…well blank.
