When I try to schedule a job for a backup we receive this error message

---------------------------
Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)
---------------------------
Error 14258: Cannot perform this operation while SQLServerAgent is starting. Try again later.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

We ran the xp stored proc (the name eludes) that tells the status of SQLServerAgent directly from Query Analyzer and in fact we are getting a return code indicating that SQLServerAgent is in fact considered to be still starting.
But the database has been up and running for days. We also tried to both reboot the server, and stop and start the SQLServerAgent processes and the SQLServer processes with no success.

We are using WIN2000 Advanced with the latest service packs
SQL server ver 8.00.818 (SP3a)

Any help

A database can be running without SQLServerAgent service being started. The SQLServerAgent service is mainly used for JOBS.

Couple of things to check:

1. how many instances of SQL Server do you have? Are you only using the default instance or do you have named instances?
if you have named instances, then the services will have different names and you need to check those (MSSQLServer$instance_name and SQLServerAgent$instance_name_

2. what login is being used for SQLServerAgent? And is it the same as the MSSQLServer service?

3. is the service set to start automatically?
