Can anyone please pass me the error list in Linux, and how to troubleshoot them?? Well, my requirement is weird but, My company has changed our server from WIN NT to Linux on my request, I being a novice had suggested this, after being convinced of Linux being superior than WIN NT. Well, the setup is done by a consultant and i have been reqularly facing one or the other problem, and many times it is impossible to get in contact with him. Hence, this request.

Also, even if the error list is related to the HDD it will help me a bit, 'cause this is what has been creating a lot of problems to me.

Meanwhile, can anyone tell me of what does this mean and how to mend it.

"hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy} ide0 :reset :success"

The harddisk is only 4 days old and the installation is RH 6.0.

PC config :
PII 333MHZ,
8.4 GB HD,
128 MB Ram
via BX 440 MotherBoard
Cirrus 5440 2MB Dram
Compex PCI lan card

Hmmm interesting,

Did the problems occur when the consultant installed installed the Linux Distribution?

AFAIK, there was a problem in accessing a Harddisk with more that 8 GB of addressable space, but I think it was fixed in the newer versions of the kernel???

My advice would be to try to find out where... Maybe <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> or <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> would be some good places to start to dig for info..;-)

With regards to the error message, sorry this is way beyond my league, I've just been foolin' around with these things for a year or two..;-)

But that sorta thing happens to me when I kinda Power-Off my computer without shutting down...;-)

Anyways, happy hunting...;-)

Presume you got that error message from syslog.log?

I'm a Unix person rather than linux but I would look for syslog.log in:

/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

Are there any other entries in here that mightbe related?
I see your error message, but the question is: "what exactly has been happening to the system to cause problems?" Does it lock up, halt, reboot?

I will say that the standard Linux error message is a lot more useful than NT's. This one is telling you that there has been an IRQ timeout, and that hda, or hard disk 1, has been reset, successfully, so the system can continue to operate. The NT version of this would probably be an unintelligible blue screen, necessitating a reboot.

Check your BIOS settings and see if you have enabled Plug and Play, also see if you can manually set the IRQ of each PCI device.

I need a bit more information to tell you what is wrong, but for what I can see by your error message is that the driver in the kernel has been asking information from the ide interface. the irq is the signal to the processor that something wants attention. so the driver has asked a question and the interface has not responed quike enough so a timeout has occured (it hasnt responed in a second or so)

If this error message only happens when turn on and not on reset/reboot, then my guess is that the hard drive is taking it's time to get up to speed and ready. So there's no need to panic, after all it's still working because of it saying success at the end.

Tell me wheather it happens on first boot, or all the time.

if you want to check your hard drive use the command:

hdparm /dev/hda
and an option after it.

hda = primary master
hdb = primary slave
hdc = secondray master
hdd = secondray slave

this might be helpful!!

also are you using a GUI or text based interface? because if your using a GUI with your current grahics card it will slow the server down, if posible change your graphics card for a faster one with a min of 4Mb ram I would get a matrox 8Mb ram and in the AGP slot this will give a very good preformance.
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href= young place
God am good!!! and good lookin :)
