I am running a small network of 30-40 machines. In the last week users are starting to complain of an error that has suddenly started appearing. Nothing new has been installed only the latest anti virus version DAT 4153.

It can appear in Excel, Word, Powerpoint or Access 97. Office 2000 seems unaffected. The error is as follows
.............................
Visual Basic Error

Compile error in hidden module. Autoexec.

.........................................

Office is installed locally on all machines and the PC O/S is win ME, 95, 98

Any advice gratefully recieved I am tearing my hair out.

Cheers

I think our applications are trying to run some automatic configurations - if you have an autoexec macro, it will try to run when you start the application.

The easiest way to stop it is to add the /m switch to the command line on the target (right click the icon for the application, and select properties) - this should prevent the autoexec macro from running.

Having said this, your autoexec macro might be trying to do something usefull, so it's not guaranteed to be the perfect solution.

You can test if this helps by holdng down the shift key when you load the app - that's a non-permanent way to do the same thing.
