Error in Office 97 Products

If I open an Excel or Word file in Windows Explorer I get the following error when it loads. (<document name> is being used by <user name>. Do you want to make a copy?)

If I open the file by starting Word or Excel and go to FILE and OPEN then this error does not occur.

Any suggestions for fixing this?
