I'm stumped.

I am logging a System Error every 2 hours (Source NETLOGON)(Event ID: 5774) as follows:

Description: Registration of the DNS record "<Computer GUID>._msdcs.Name.com.600 IN CNAME <ComputerName>.Name.com. failed with the following error: DNS RR set that ought not exist, does exist."

I have tried deleting this record within msdcs, and restarting the computer. Adds it back in just fine, but the error message keeps popping up. The system is setup to accept secure dynamic registration which in all other respects is working fine. It sure looks like the problem has something to do with the system not understanding that it is already registered and that it doesn't need to register it again. Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP3 and Exchange 2000 Server SP3. Using DNS with Active Directory. No DHCP.

I will stay close to this thread. Please feel free to ask additional questions, and I will respond as quickly as I can with additional information.

Thanks

Have one single DC?
Did you rename the domain?
How is the IP stack configured on that controller? (eg: DNS config, is it itself there?).

Gia--

I will attempt to answer your three questions:

1) Single DC
2) 90% certain domain has NOT been renamed
3)
DNS
"Server Name"
Forward Lookup Zones
"Domain".com
_msdcs
dc
domains
gc
pdc
"Server GUID",alias, "Server"."Domain".com

How's your IP connection configured?
Have you set in DNS settings also it's own address?

What's a simple ipconfig all tell you?
This been happening a long time, or just start?
Have you noticed any other problems?

Glen:

This is the ONLY Error message in the system log. All other items are informational.

This is a new install. Server and clients operate properly. Problem has existed from day one.

Here is the ipconfig /all output: (radacted)

C:\>ipconfig /all

These settings are all correct? Your not running dhcp on this machine, the subnet mask is corect, things like that. To be honest I don't think this is part of the problem, but I learned the hard way, you've got to look at all the details. Some of the smallest things can cause problems. Glen A. Johnson

From eventid.net

Error: "DNS RR set that ought not exist, does exist." - This can be caused by someone manually creating an alias for that namespace (in this case test.com). If none of the published fixes addresses your problem, try this instead. Open the DNS console from the MMC and expand the primary dns server. Select Forward Lookup Zones and select the target zone (test.com). There you should see an A (alias) or CNAME record. Delete it, then stop and start the netlogon service

I guess you didn't read my original message. I tried the soluton you suggest. I also reviewed all the "published fixes" before posting this request for help.

Let us know if the one above helps and if not I can do another search.
It seems to be what you describe as happening.

You are right. The problem is the same. UNfortunately, if I understand the article correctly, I can find no wildcard character in the GUID record within _msdcs. Scavanging is not enabled.

This is another article on that type error, when you first deleted the entry it might have been the corrupt one.
You could try the suggestions of
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
net stop netlogon
net start netlogon
then see if it was possibly just the error being retained as a bad record in the DNS cache.

Dear futuretech204:

That tech note you suggested (Q290409) has solved the problem. Or at least it gave me the clue necessary to solve the problem.

I deleted the alternate DNS server from the TCP/IP Properties list and ran the flush, re-register, start, stop routine.

I don't think I will ever miss that secondary server. It was connected via a wireless portion of the network which I believe was either periodically unavailable or subject to latency. Those problems may have had something to do with generating the error message.

Thanks for the help!
