Fellow Geeks,

We are running Veritas BackUp Exec ver 8.5 rev 3572 on a Windows 2000 Server. BackUp Exec will work fine for a while backing up our files to tape (<-- I know this is stone age) then suddenly for no apparent reason we get:

"An error was encountered writing to the on-disk catalogs".

We end out uninstalling then re-installing, and BackUp Exec will work fine for a while, then suddenly we get the same error. When we get the error, we also get four errors in the event log under Applications:

This happens at the end of the tape backup when it goes to catalog what it backed up.

If anybody has any ideas on why this happens or how to fix this, I am all ears.

Thanks for reading this,

This one is simple to fix.

1. Exit Backup Exec application
2. stop Backup Exec services
3. go to \Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs folder
4. rename betopcat.idx
5. restart services.

betopcat.old (it will create a new one on restarting the services) It is probably safe to delete it, but I always say rename to cover myself B-)
