Hi, I'm having problems applying patchset 8.1.7.4.

We are currently on version 8.1.7.2 and would like upgrade to version 9. However I'm told that to upgrade direct to version 9 you have to be on at least patchset 8.1.7.4, so the first thing I'm trying to do is move from from 8.1.7.2 to 8.1.7.4.

This should be straight forward however each time I try and apply the 8.1.7.4 patchset I am getting the message "Error :*** Alert: There are no patches that need to be applied from the patch set Oracle 8i Patchset 8.1.7.4.0. **.

The platform we are on is HP-UX 11i 64 bit, the instructions I'm following to do the patchset install are from the ORacle 8.1.7.4 Patch Set Notes. Could this problem be caused by having an OraInventory directory that's corrupt/incomplete? (just a thought)

Thanks for your help in advance.

Logon to your dba account and run the following query.

select * from v$version;

One of the lines returned will be of the form
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.x.x - Production

This string tells you what version (Enterprise Edition) and what level the core release is on. For example, if you are applying Enterprise level patches and you don't have enterprise, then you will get that message. If you are really at 8.1.7.4, then you will also get that message.

Please post the results.
