I receive the following error message when I try to delete a recently opened file on my Windows 2000 Server from Windows XP:

Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannont delete filename: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try agian.

The file is not opened on any system. If I go to my servers computer management/shared folders area and select Open Files, it is listed. I can Close the open connection to the file, and then delete it, but that is a nuisance. Is there any way to resolve this issue?

Thank in advance for the help,

hello bwuchner

i have already the same problem. how do you fix it? the problem appear only if i want to delete a file from the server(win2000) with an WinXP workstation. When i delete it from a win2000 workstation, there is no problem.

thanks

Thanks bwuchner for the tip on checking the management/shared Open Files to delete the file. In the past I'd logout, then login again to delete the file. It always worked, but your method is better. My suspicion is that this is a "feature" of Windows, not a "problem".

We had the same problem at a clients and at our office.
Symptom. Long delay or File in Use error when deleting a file off a windows 2000 server from a windows XP workstation.
What fixed it for us was turning off realtime protection for NAV (Norton) on the client and server.
After change deleting from server was instant where just a sec before caused a 45 second delay or the in use error.
This article explains it. 2001062763636948 on symantec's support site. This condition may apply to other AV's as well but not sure.

I can not seam to access 2001062763636948 on symantec's website.
Inline's suggestion would be understandable as I am running two symantec antivirus products (one for the workstation and another on the server). Disabling virus protection is not an acceptable solution. Is it know which versions of NAV this effects? (I am running 7.61 on the server and Norton 2003 on the workstations)

To all who have responded to this post:

Are each of these servers configured as Domain Controllers?
Do the XP installs include SP1?

Look at
I moved to SAV 8.0 server with managed clients and this issue stuck around. I have just changed the EnableSecuritySignature value from 1 to 0 on my Win 2k domain controller and have not yet noticed this problem! Please let me know if it works for you.
