Help! I was modifying my page (using MS Word, coz I realized too late that Frontpage was not installed on my new system)and I was adding a hyperlink and saving the defaut.aspx page, but now all I get is an error page with this title : Error - Could not instantiate control Sharepoint:portalConnection.

What's wrong? How do I get back my home page?

I think that FrontPage is the only editor that is fully compatible with SharePoint, so it definately looks like word corrupted code in your aspx file. But hopefully you backed it up before doing any modifications?

Cheers,
Thomas

Unfortunately, I didn't even contemplate that backup... (I know, I know.... what kind of developer are you???)

Is there a way of generating a new default.aspx page from Sharepoint that I can reconfigure ?

Well, I have also been there :) and done modifications that went wrong and had no backups.

What if you create another portal in your installation? Perhaps you could try and see if you could use that default.aspx file with some modifications.

Have you installed FrontPage and opened then current default.aspx page and see if there has been some code added to the page from Word?

Cheers,
Thomas

Hey Thomas... that's what I ended up doing - reconfiguring the webpage from an old copy. I had an old default.aspx file that I modified... the web page now has a different look and feel, because that file was a very very early one... but it works ;)

I did open the current default.aspx, but I couldn't tell what was missing or changed, so that's what made me decide to look at changing my old copy. It doesn't even use the Sharepoint:portalConnection, so I should not have that problem again! ;)

What exactly does the SharePoint:portalConnection do, anyway?
