Error - Could not import the clipboard because there is not enough RAM

Greetings,
I was getting the following error upon startup with Photoshop 6.0 and 6.01:

Could not import the clipboard because there is not enough memory (RAM)

This has only occurred since I upgraded to Windows XP from Win98 SE. I thought this might have been a compatibility issue (even though the Adobe website claims that 6.0 is compatible with XP) so I upgraded to Photoshop 7.0. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. Although it does not prevent me from using the program, it still is an annoyance. I tried playing around with the virtual memory and paging sizes, but to no avail. If anyone else has encountered this problem and found a solution, I would like to hear from you.

I had the same problem. Mine occured when trying to cut an image from a pdf file. I blew it up to 1200% to captue moer DPI per inch. I pasted it to the program. I went back to the PDF and tried another at the same 1200% and got the same error message as you did. What I found was that IF i cleared the clipboard by copying soemthing small or a line of text, i could then copy the 1200% image again. I think your clipboard is full when trying to copy whatever it is your copying
I tried the whole virtual settings thing too with no luck so good luck! peace

Are you running other programs (software) while running PShop?

How much memory do you have?

jajaaaj: the problem occurs when I first start up Photoshop. It does not have to do with performing any particular Photoshop operations.

mscallisto: Sometimes I am running another program, and sometimes I am not. The problem occurs more often when I am running another program, but not always. In other words, I cannot recreate the cause of the error message with 100% certainty.

It still sounds like it could be a memory issue.

I don't know the XP navagation that shows your memory usage but if you are running programs like "Virus protection programs" McAfee, Norton etc., they often eat a lot of memory.

If you are running virus protection, try stopping that to see if it helps.

Again you should investigate memory usage in XP to see what memory resident programs are running (TSR's, terminate and stay resident) programs may be eating your RAM, and which ones can be cancelled to free up memory.

I had this same problem happening on my computer (WinXP Pro & Photoshop 7). When I started up Photoshop I got the error about being unable to import the clipboard for a lack of memory. I found this very odd as there is nothing in my clipboard and I have 1GB of RAM with 675MB free, after opening photoshop.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, overwriting the preferences and adjusting my scratch disks. None of which made any difference. So then I decided to try adjusting the size of my paging file in Windows. I previously had it set to a constant 1GB so I decided to double it and see what happened. To my surprise the error disappeared. I closed and reopend Photoshop a bunch of times and it worked fine. So at least on my system it seems it had to do with the paging file size. I would recommend increasing yours and see if that helps. I doubt that you need to double it as I did so just play around with it and find a happy medium that works for you!

Thank you SoulForce, I have nearly identical the system (WinXP Pro & Photoshop 7), with the same problem, and your solution fixed it.

Interestingly enough, the last thing I did before the problem showed itself was to try and get a screen capture of an open .pdf file. I pressed ALT-PrtScrn, and everything slowed to a crawl. For some reason that's a no-no.

Anyway, I went to Contrl Panel ----> System, and changed my paging file size, rebooted, and the problem disappeared.

BTW, I did NOT increase my paging file size. It was originally set for 756 minimum and 1524 maximum. I don't like having XP waste time trying to dynamically managed the size of my paging file, so I set the min and max both to 756 (which in effect erases it and starts over with a fresh paging file upon reboot).

I don't think it's the size of the paging file that means anything. I think it just gets corrupted and needs to be reset is all.
