I get the following error codes when I try to shut down my IBM R50 laptop. Any ideas what it is?

0X0000008E
(0XC0000047,0X8051D386,0XF96AB828,0X00000000)

What is the text accompanying the error?

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA?
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED? etc.

These are more important than the numbers. One reason could be the HaxDoor virus, so update your A/V and run a full scan.

There is a free A/V app at
Are there any peripherals connected to the laptop? USB or Firewire?

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'

Check to see you have adequate disk space.

Check with hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

Got this today

I tried doing a BIOS upgrade, but when the system reboots I get the same Blue screen and message and the update doesn't take.

Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking and updating your antivirus and running a full scan. If you can get it up in Safe Mode (press F8 during boot) it's possibly a virus.

is a good online scanner.

1.) follow the suggestions on scanning your laptop for malware...

2.) reinstall/upgrade your graphics drivers... as the issue of the problem is usually hardware related...

3.) do a full memory test, using memtest86+ or similar program...

No longer an issue as I don't have the laptop anymore.
