error code prevents xp install 2

Windows XP pro is suddenly showing an error message and turns off computer. Never did this before, but does this when put to any computer from lap top to desk tops.

**File acpi.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 5897in d\xpsp1\base\setup\setup.c.

then says press any key to continue and turns off.

any ideas?
