This has me stumped and I'm about ready to blow out my partition and reinstall XP Pro back on the system. Long story short, i purchased a new HP with Vista about 4 months ago but at the time it wasnt compatiable with 50% of my products so installed my XP Pro from my decommissioned system that was no longer in use. I recently wanted to reinstall Vista so I used the Upgrade Anytime CD that ships with the HP system, which does not allow you to do a clean install by the way. Only pushes your old operating system over to Windows.old folder.

Now when i try to Windows Update i get this error code when trying to download and install the first update which is the update to the actual Windows Update installer. The only resolution i found online had to do with stopping and switching a service to automatic start-up. Only problem is the service is a Microsoft Office service and i don't have Office installed on the machine.

Anyone else run into this error code yet, or helped someone who as with a resolution?

Did you re-install your old version of Vista, or was this an Upgrade of XP?

Windows Anytime Upgrade: Installation Overview and FAQ

Q. Can I use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade from previous versions of Windows?

"You can upgrade only computers that are already running Windows Vista. The upgrade does not work for computers that are running earlier versions of Windows".

I've just spent several hours being stumped by this problem on a brand new Toshiba notebook straight out of the box.

Finally uninstalled Comodo Firewall Pro, stopped the windows update service (using services.msc) deleted the Windows Update history (contents of %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder) and re-booted. Windows Update now working fine; will re-install Comodo afterwards to see if it keeps ticking!

Hope this helps

P.S. It's vaguely possible that the following had some effect as well; it can't hurt in any case:

If it is windows vista and you are seeing this error when trying to install updates,
please try the following:-

1.. Open an Administrator command prompt by right clicking on Start -> All Programs ->
Accessories -> Command Prompt and selecting "Run as Administrator" and clicking "Allow"
for the elevation prompt
2.. In the command prompt, type the command below fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
(This assumes that C: is the drive in which Vista is installed. If it is installed on
another drive like D:, please change the drive letter appropriately)
3.. Reboot the machine
This is the resolution only for 8007000b error while installing updates on Vista. This
doesn't apply for other OS like Windows XP SP2 etc

Yes, you can do a clean install on an hp system without all the cr*pware using the Upgrade Anytime disc. See thread1583-1418627.
